Running Martingales
A running martingale can be an important piece of training equipment for horses. A bit becomes less effective if a horse raises its head too far. A martingale, running or standing, prevents this. The running martingale works by applying downward pressure on the bit when a horse raises its head. This encourages the horse to drop the head, therefore, allowing improved control. Deemed safer by many, the running attachment allows quick release of pressure. This quick release allows the horse to gain head control quickly, therefore, allowing the horse to regain balance and control in times of need. Used in show jumping and cross country, running martingales can be particularly useful for strong or young or inexperienced horses. The running martingale attachment is typically on a breastplate or neck strap; which, can make a rider feel more secure. Use rein stops with a running martingale. Rein stops prevent the ring from getting caught on the bit.
