Product Description
Mattes Curved Girth with Sheepskin Cover
Mattes curved girth is the Mattes Slim Line Crescent Girth with a detachable sheepskin cover. The Mattes girths come in four different shapes. The crescent shape/curved shape is designed for horses with a combination of a short back and sprung rib cage (ribs with a great degree of curvature). This (often preferred) conformation causes most girths to slide forward into the horse’s elbow. The curved/crescent shape keeps the girth from being pushed forward and provides room for the elbows, helping to eliminate galling (irritation). The “Slim Line” material on the exposed side of the girth is leather, slightly reducing the width of the girth when compared to the full cotton base of the original Mattes crescent girth. This reduction of material width may increase elbow room.

Sheepskin Cover
The Mattes Curved Girth comes with a detachable sheepskin cover. The cover is real sheepskin, not just wool on a cotton backing. The design ensures the security of the cover to the Slim Line base with its multiple Velcro anchor points. Once removed, simply throw it in the washing machine using MELP sheepskin detergent. Covers are available by themselves, let us know if you would like to purchase a separate cover.
Mattes Slim Line Material
Mattes makes the base of the curved girth out of both cotton twill and leather. The leather, called “Slim Line,” comes in three colors: black, brown and champagne. The cotton side of the girth holds the sheepskin cover via the has the Velcro anchors stitched into it and faces the horse. The benefit of the hybrid is looks + some function. The SlimLine leather reduces the width of the girth by a few centimeters. Depending on your horse’s confirmation, this reduction in width can increase the space available for the shoulder – reducing irritation.
Other Mattes Shaped Girths
Mattes makes several girth shapes besides the Mattes curved girth (crescent). There are the Asymmetric, Athletico and the Contoured girth. Each has a specific purpose to help with saddle fitting.
