Mattes Curb Chain Cover as a Chin Strap Cover
If your horse is rubbed by you bridle chin strap, you might want to try a curb chain cover to fix it. Mattes makes one version, Christ Lammfelle makes another version of the chin strap cover. Both companies use wool but Christ Lammfelle uses lambskin and produces their product in 2 colors: natural or black. The Christ chin strap cover is also less expensive.
Use of Merino Sheepskin
Mattes makes many products using Merino sheepskins. The wool from a Merino sheep is widely regarded as the best wool available. Most products made by Mattes uses the skin along with the wool. This is different from using just the wool and plugging the wool onto a cotton backing – known as “wool backed”. It is generally accepted that sheepskin, opposed to “wool backed” produces a better, longer lasting product. Mattes sources most of its sheepskin from Australia with a majority of the stitching work being done in the Philippines.
Care Instructions
Use a wool safe detergent such as MELP sheepskin cleaner once a month if used 3-4 times a week. Simply add a few drops of MELP to a bucket and scrub your curb chain cover until it’s clean. The MELP not only cleans but restores the natural oils in the sheepskin. Dunk in a water bucket between uses to remove excess sweat.
