The Mechanics
The French link snaffle mouthpiece functions similarly to the Dr. Bristol in that it alleviates palate pressure that you may get with an ordinary single-jointed snaffle which is especially helpful for horses with a particularly low palate. The primary differences between this bit and a dr. bristol is the link shape and angle. The shape is more similar to a “dog bone” shape (and is often called a dog bone link), the purpose of this shape is to create a much softer pressure on the tongue. In addition to the shape the angle, which is flat or in line with the cheek pieces, allows for little to no edge pressure on the tongue. This bit is excellent for those horses who are very soft in the bridle, have a tendency to not want to work on the bit (try to hide from it or get above or behind the bit), and have a very low palate. Pairing this very soft mouth piece with a loose ring makes a great bit for those hotter/more sensitive horses (like your typical OTTB). The loose ring’s sliding action makes it more difficult for the horse to brace against it, promoting relaxation and chewing from the horse. The ring will also rotate slightly before the bit mouthpiece adds pressure to the mouth, thus allowing it to give a softer signal than a more fixed bit.
As always consult your professional/trainer on bitting options for you and your horse.
