What Are FirstIce, Reusable Ice Packs?
FirstIce the brand name reusable ice pack made in the USA by Ice Horse. These ice packs are unique because when they are frozen, they “puff up” like a snow cone. These packs are much easier than standard gel ice packs because the ice crystals are able to be molded around a horse’s leg making them even more closely molded than regular chunks of ice.
FirstIce stays cold for about 2 hours at 75 degrees. When applied to the horse, they will stay cold without needing to be rotated, for over an hour – plenty of time to ice 2 horses using your Ice Horse tendon wraps. The ice packs are able to be heated when you follow the simple instructions on the pack. The only problem with these packs is that they only last about 20 freezes / thaws. A hard block will form after about 20 cycles due to the crystals fusing together; therefore, they can’t be molded around the leg. This is why we also sell Ice Horse replacement packs.
New Design
The new design of the Ice Horse tendon wraps introduced stronger velcro and a better, anti slip material. The overall shape is also better, conforming to the leg very well. Unfortunately, the new design doesn’t allow the user to place regular ice into the pouches like the older version. You’re going to have to use the IH replacement packs with these tendon wraps. If you’re looking to cool down front legs using regular ice, we have the Jacks Ice Boots for a little bit less money or the Whirlpool boots for a bit more.
