Difference Between Running and Standing Martingale
A martingale can be an essential piece of equipment for a ride. It aids a rider to improve the horse’s head carriage and acts as an additional form of control. Most importantly, your goals and discipline dictate the type of martingale you choose. Running and standing are two of the most common types.
A standing martingale is a single strap that attaches to the noseband. It then runs between the legs, through a neck strap and onto the girth. This martingale is more passive. Therefore, the horse’s head directs its use.
Differing, a running martingale does not connect to the noseband but rather it splits in two and has rings on the end where the reins pass through. A running martingale is available in main two ways. First, there are one-piece running martingales. These are similar to the standing martingale. They attach to the girth and runs through a neck strap. The second is a running martingale attachment. This typically connects to a breastplate or neck strap. Martingale or rein stops, made of leather or rubber, should be used with running martingale because the stops prevent the rings from slipping forward and getting stuck on the bit. The running martingale is less restrictive. Some consider it safer because of the quick release.
