Why Slow Feeding is Important
There are many benefits to slow feeding your horses. Grazing is in their DNA so emulating that can do the following…
- Decreased secretion of Cortisol (stress hormone which can lead to obesity)
- Less risk of ulcers (constant chewing leads to the creation of saliva which balances out the gastric acid of horses)
- Increased digestion (mobility is the key to healthy digestion)
- Minimized boredom
- Helps the natural wear of teeth
- Weight management (regulates insulin and cortisol)
- Decreased food aggression
In the wild, horses would graze for 16-17 hours a day so naturally, their bodies create an immense amount of stomach acid. This is usually counterbalanced by the constant production of alkaline saliva. So, to keep your horse happy and healthy, slow feeding is the way to go especially with the Hay Play Feeder because it gives them a fun thing to do even when they aren’t eating.
