What is a flash strap?
A flash strap is a bridle part. It is a thinner piece of leather that is attached to a regular noseband or cavesson. It is secured under the horse’s chin to stabilize the bit in their mouth. Prevents bit evasion such as cross jawing or putting their tongue over the bit.
What is the purpose of a flash?
The flash noseband keeps the horse’s mouth closed. It prevents bit evasion.
Should I use a flash?
Depends. The flash can help prevent evasion, however, horses open their mouths for many reasons. For example, if they open their mouth due to the bit being uncomfortable, do not use a flash to keep it closed. Most importantly, determine why your horse opens its mouth.
Fitting a flash noseband
Misuse of the flash attachment can cause more harm than good. It can restrict breathing, cause jaw clenching, numb the mouth, and more. Therefore, fitting it correctly is of the utmost importance. Start with fitting the noseband in the correct place. This is determined by the type of noseband. Wider nosebands fit differently than regular cavessons. Once this is placed correctly, the strap attachment should sit behind the chin and not on the lips. Be sure not to overtighten it. Leave one to two-finger width between strap and chin.
