Why a figure 8 vs. drop vs. flash?
Really the decision ends up lying with your particular horse. Bridling is a very important part of the equation almost more than correct bitting. The strength of your bit can be vastly altered by the type of cavason (noseband) you pair with it. Think of it this way, if your horse just opens his/her mouth every time you touch the reins how effective can your bit be?
Now the choice of cavason depends on what your horse likes/needs. A regular cavason or noseband with a flash or flash attachment can do the trick of keeping your horse’s mouth closed, however, this is arguably the mildest form of closure. This is simply because of the leverage (or lack thereof) it provides for the closure. If this does the trick than AWESOME, however depending on the type of bit you are using there may be interference and rubbing, i.e. if you have a Three Ring Gag the top rings may rub where they cross the cavason. The Figure 8 provides the freedom on the cheeks. With this, any rubbing that may occur by interference with the bit dissipates. It also provides more leverage to close the jaw. This is simply by where it sits on the upper and lower jaw, while also providing more space for the nostrils to expand. For example, more breathing room when you are galloping.
In addition to the flash, the figure 8 it will also aid in preventing your horse from moving his/her lower jaw from side to side or crossing his jaw. This is odd but some do it as another form of evasion. Â The drop noseband goes around the lower nose of the horse below the bit, this is popular in dressage and was developed by the Spanish Riding School, it will not interfere with the action of the bit (like a regular cavason with flash may) while also providing a gentle reminder to keep the mouth closed. Â Five Star Tack recommend their drop noseband for Dressage use only. They do this because it can possibly restrict breathing when galloping or jumping.
Our Recommendation:
We recommend consulting your primary trainer/professional when altering your bitting or bridling. They will be able to help you and your horse find the perfect combination.
Genevieve Faith –
I’ve had the Kingsbury Figure 8 for over a year now and the amount of comments I’ve had is almost uncountable. The leather looks like it’s only been worn less than a handful of times and it’s being worn 4 days a week. Everything fit perfectly and I’ve never been more impressed with a leather before. Highly recommend this bridle!
