Saddle Pad Shims for that Perfect Fit

Saddle pad shims are one of those items that are not glorious to shop for but when you need a set to help you fit your saddle, it’s good to have a pair on hand along with a half pad or full pad that can hold them. We have three brands of saddle pad shims – EA Mattes POLY-FLEX Shims, Christ Lammfelle shims, and ThinLine Shims. Each are inexpensive and should last you a long time.

  • Christ Lammfelle Shims
  • ThinLine Shims
  • Various cuts available (see drop down to select options)
  • Replacement saddle pad shims fit most other brands of pads

EA Mattes Poly Flex Shims

The EA Mattes POLY-FLEX Shims are 5mm thick and are designed to be layered in the Mattes Correction Pads but fit many other pads that accept shims. Poly Flex Shims are very resilient to impact and breaking down. The material reduces the risk off a shim “bottom out” like foam or other materials. These EA mattes shims come in three varieties: Dressage cut shims, All purpose shims and Jumper cut shims. You can select what you want from the drop down.

Christ Lammfelle Shims

We started carrying the Christ Lammfelle Shims after a customer came to us who purchased the Christ Lammfelle half pad with shims from the original importer over 20 years ago. She told us the pad still looked beautiful but the shims inside had deteriorated. We hear this a lot about Christ pads… they last FOREVER. The shims are literally specifically cut, high quality carpet padding – spare no expense here.

The Christ shims come in a 4 pack and fit in the Christ Lammfelle dressage pad with shims and the Christ half pad with shims.

ThinLine Shims

Each ThinLine insert is made with trademarked open cell technology that is 100% breathable. They feature 95% shock absorbency and are infused with an anti-microbial to help prevent mold and fungus. Each Shim is custom cut by Master Saddlery with a tapered edge to prevent pressure points and they are cut to stay in place and never shift. We have three types of shims Front, Back, and Bridging shims. Front shims relieve wither pressure. While back shims are designed to lift the cantle.

Bridging shims are designed to help the swaybacked horse to lift the saddle when you are missing contact with the middle of the horses back. They are not to be used in conjunction with front and back shims. It is recommended that only one or two pairs are used at a time to give the horse time to redevelop topline muscle once he finds that he can lift his back without withering and cantle pressure.

What Are Saddle Pad Shims Used For?

Generally speaking, saddle pad shims are used as one element in getting a saddle to fit correctly. They can help with the saddle’s balance and yours as well… but I’d suggest Centered Riding before a new half pad with shims.
