Mexican Noseband / Grackle Noseband / Figure 8 Noseband / Crossed Bridle
Where you come from determines what you call this type of noseband. All three names describe the same thing: a noseband whose straps are fastened with a buckle behind the upper jaw of the horse, above the cheekbone. The straps then cross the nose on a diagonal, extending down under the bit and fasten there with a second buckle at the chin groove.
Why Use A Figure 8 Noseband?
A Figure Eight Noseband like many nosebands has a design to keep your horse’s mouth closed and prevent jaw crossing. Evasion of the bit that compromises the control you have over the horse. The figure 8 noseband purpose is visible in comparing its relatively high positioning on the horse’s nostrils to other nosebands. This high positioning of the straps does not pull the horse’s cheeks into his teeth while ensuring the nostrils are open for maximum air intake. This performance-enhancing design makes the Grackle noseband / Chessington figure 8 bridle very popular in the show jumping world and for cross country.
