Properly Fitting a Figure 8 Bridle
The Figure 8 style noseband, sometimes called the grackle, is used in show jumping and eventing. Stronger than the traditional noseband, it is important to ensure the correct fit. Generally, there are two rings on the sides of the horse’s face. These rings fit behind the cheekpieces of the bridle, above the cheekbone. These should not press into the cheekbone.
The disc or leather piece in the center of the noseband should be centered on the nose. Avoid placing to low that the straps will impede the horse’s nostrils and therefore, their breathing. If you note the noseband slipping forward at the rings, push the disc or leather piece down to help improve the fit.
The fit should be snug. The bottom strap connects over the bit and under the chin, while the upper strap connects under the horse’s jaw. Check out this article from Heel’s Down Magazine to watch a video on fitting a figure 8 noseband.
