Horse Neck Strap

Horse Neck Strap provides you with an “oh crap handle” for those exciting moments you would prefer to stay in the saddle for. These horse neck straps, by Shires Equestrian, are manufactured under the name “Tapestry Neck Strap”. They’re fully adjustable and come in brown or black, cob or horse size – unlike the Nunn Finer leather neck strap that only comes in one color and one size. Other features that make this horse neck strap the best option is a D-ring you can use to braid the strap into the mane, securing the strap at the perfect place on the horse’s neck.

  • 2 sizes, 2 colors
  • Leather horse neck strap with quality hardware
  • D-ring allows the strap to be braided into the perfect place on neck
  • Fancy stitching adds a touch of class
  • Elastic allows for a bit of give
  • Superior to old martingales and stirrup leathers in terms of usability and durability

Why Use a Neck Strap

For some people, moving their hands forward for a neck strap is a bit more natural than grabbing for the mane. For others, using a neck strap for balance helps keep them from jabbing their pony in the mouth. A few riders find that just having a neck strap for horse riding helps reduce their anxiety.

Neck straps are not just for beginner riders! An Eventful Life has a great article about William Fox-Pitt and why he always has his horse in a neck strap.

“I think I’ve converted quite a few of the British team to the benefits of wearing a neck strap. Certainly Mary (King) is wearing one these days. Of course just because it’s there doesn’t mean to say you have to hang on to it all the time. But, it’s just like an added piece of safety equipment. Some people just use the martingale strap and although I have done that on occasion it’s not quite the same because it doesn’t sit in quite the right place and a breastplate is no good because it sits too close to the saddle.”

– William Fox-Pitt

 Better Than a Stirrup Leather

Stirrup leathers are typically too thick to hold with any comfort. If you have small hands, you might not be able to hold an old stirrup leather at all. This runs true for old martingales too – typically the leather is just too thick. If you are looking for a cheap alternative, try a rein that still has enough structural integrity to not break while you’re using it.
